M-Learning: Mobile Learning with Lessonly

In case you haven’t heard, mobile learning is poised to take over the world. Okay, maybe not the entire world, but mobile learning, or m-learning, is definitely becoming more and more prominent as the technology we use on a daily basis continues to get more complex, and yet more accessible at the same time. However excited you are, it’s impossible to go about creating your own lessons that can move without first knowing the m-learning definition. We’re not talking about some mobile learning PDF here either, thought and design needs to be used in order to enable people to learn where they are comfortable while still motivating them to do so efficiently.

Mobile Learning Definition

When you ask yourself “What is mlearning?” it might be easy to say that it’s so closely related to elearning that you just placed elearning on a mobile device. Well, that’s not exactly true. Mobile learning can more specifically be defined as the way people learn through multiple contexts, devices, and situations. Does this include taking training lessons outside the office? Sure. But, there are many other m learning examples and types of mobile learning that help define the space.

By using electronic and mobile devices, learners can experience and weave new and different social and content interactions into their learning experience. We’re talking way more than mobile phone education right now. Learners gain a deeper and more personal understanding into the content that you are providing them with so that information is more easily retained and stored. This increases the return on your investment in educating your employees, and those better employees can go on to make your company or business better than it had been before.

Mobile Learning Made Easy

As you can see, the expansive growth in the mobile elearning industry has called for some changes to how content is thought of, designed, and eventually created. With Lessonly, we allow content creators to have all the authoring tools they need to create content-rich, contextual, and engaging training documents and lessons to be passed out to their employees. By including the authoring tools inside our learning management system, there is no formatting of information that can cause meaning and intent behind learning to be lost in translation.

There are plenty of other advantages of mobile learning education when created in a software tool such as Lessonly. We believe that part of the learning process is laughing, and by allowing our software to be usable and compatible on a host of electronic devices from desktops to mobile phones, we open the door for that. We encourage the use of various forms of multimedia in our lesson authoring tools such as videos, photos, and even funny GIFs you find on the internet. Lessons are still valuable and informational within the Lessonly software, but the lighthearted jokes and images serve to show our clients that it doesn’t have to be something that someone can dread. Nowhere is that more important than if learners are taking their lessons and training outside of the office. The only place that a lesson is surer to not be accomplished if the learner is dreading it, is if they have to dread doing it within their home, at a coffee shop, or when they are traveling.

Why Mobile Learning Apps Need to be Flexible

When it comes to the history of learning management applications, the tables were heavily favored in the direction of the administrators and managers. Used for compliance’s sake to show that employees had been trained on a certain topic, these applications locked-down content and learners were not involved in the thought process behind the creation of the usability. When pushing content out into the world and placing it inside mobile learning applications, this cannot be the case anymore. Content has to be tailored to the device that the learner is using otherwise it won’t even be understandable in some cases.

Mobile education apps are bringing the power back to the learners within the field of mobile learning. Since learning is most efficient when it is available on all of these different screen sizes and device types, the content has to come to the learners, not the other way around. The best mobile learning apps understand this, and offer everything that the administrators and managers need to understand and track the informational learning, while still making the experience tolerable for the learners.

Mobile Learning Trends

As we continue to innovate new technologies and devices that we can carry around with us on a daily basis, the future of mobile learning will continue to grow. As many places as learners have to sit down and digest information will be the limit for places that mobile learning will be able to go as well.

As an industry trend, which then applies to mobile learning, automation is going to be a huge marketing going forward. To help learners remember that they need to stay on top of their lessons and training, automated triggers that email and send reminders given contextual clues is not very far off. When compliance regulations reign supreme within an industry, automatic recurring assignments can make sure that learners are always on top of their certification, no matter where they are. Mobile learning will go a long way toward helping that trend.

Expect to start seeing an abundance of mobile learning conferences pop up across the country and the world as the industry looks to define its boundaries and bring together like-minded people to figure out what the best ways to tackle this problem are and how to go about it.
