Life is Practice: How My Love for Yoga Relates to Virtual Training Software

A few years ago after soul searching, goal setting, and vision boarding, I set off on a journey to deepen my yoga practice by becoming a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). While yoga had already changed me in so many ways by that point, I had no idea this next step would call me to upend my life, take larger-than-life risks, and ultimately embody the very essence of my motto—Life is practice. And that’s held true for me through 2020, whether I’m practicing yoga through a number of virtual classroom platforms or helping my customers better leverage Lessonly’s virtual training software.

Who’s Patañjali, you ask?

During my studies, I was introduced to Patañjali, a sage in India, who is thought to be the author of a number of Sanskrit works. The greatest of which is the Yoga Sutras, a classical yogic text. Arguably one of Patañjali’s most important teachings in the Sutras states atha yoga anushasanam, which means, “Now, begins the practice of yoga” (emphasis added). While its meaning is often missed or simply skipped, this sutra, or thread, is now one of the most important parts of my life’s tapestry.

So, what does Patañjali mean in this teaching, and what the heck does it have to do with our modern lives and experiential learning? What is meant by experiential learning in the first place? Glad you asked. Let’s break it down.

“Now, begins…”

Here, we’re invited not to live with the brakes on or by looking in the rear view mirror. While the past may have been filled with stories of happiness, sadness, or somewhere in between, the now beckons you to be present. To stay in this moment and to, in essence, never look back. Likewise, don’t worry about what’s ahead. You, my friend, are right where you are meant to be and are arriving right on time. Stay in the delicate balance of the here and now.

“…the practice…”

The best of the best practice skills and drills to increase their functional and operational techniques. Why should we, in our roles, feel it would be any different? One of my very favorite sayings I’ve learned while working here at Lessonly is, practice makes prepared. Isn’t that the truth? If we strive for greatness, we must be intentional about putting in the work. Whether it’s the physical asanas (poses) exercises like your power pose, refining your way of thinking or altogether exploring a new methodology, practice and all its inner workings move you in the direction of the beautiful being you’re becoming. When you’re tempted to quit, stay in “the pose” five more breaths, go the extra mile for a teammate, and, by golly, honor that which you are actively becoming!

“…of yoga.”

Derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj,’ yoga means to join, to yoke, or unite. I love the mental picture we’re building here—stay with me! It’s calling us to be right here right now in the vulnerable state of transition and development into the best version of ourselves. And isn’t that what life’s about?!

Putting it all together

Wondering what yoga and virtual training software have in common? It’s. all. about. practice. 🤓📚✏️ Both figuratively and literally, the very best online teaching software and virtual training tools position lifelong, continuous learning as something we get to do, not something we have to do. In essence, it becomes part of your daily workflow, routine, and eventually, your life.

Here at Lessonly, we deliver world-class training through (what I think is) the best online learning platform in 2020 by enabling teams to move fast, stay aligned, and do Better Work so they can live better lives—in or out of the office.
