How Hybrids are Changing the Game: The Difference Between a Learning Content Management System and a Learning Management System

Confession time. I’m a salesperson in the online learning space, and I didn’t know the difference between a learning content management system and a learning management system. So like a good, curious sales rep, I did some research! But I had a really hard time finding any information that included a well-defined learning content management system definition. My hope is that this blog post provides just that, plus a little more.

What’s an LCMS?

So let’s get to it! What is a learning content management system? It is a software designed to house all of the essential learning materials that are vital to your company. It acts as a knowledge repository that allows teams to author, import, and publish content. However, with a learning content management system or education content management system, there is no way to deliver this information, manage the users that are accessing the content, or track the learning comprehension or retention of the material. That is where a learning management system becomes extremely helpful! 

What’s an LMS?

A learning management system definition is as follows: it’s a software that gives learning and enablement leaders a way to deliver and track the training and learning content that is sent out to their teams. However, there is a trend in the learning management system (LMS) software space where newer systems are designed with authoring tools native to the tool. As I alluded to, traditional LMS options can be a bit of a bummer. Many of the popular systems out there don’t have authoring capabilities and require a separate, complex system or authoring tool to build out the content they need. These specific learning management solutions require the services of an instructional designer who’s received a higher education and specialize in building content through these third party authoring tools. This means there is a steep learning curve to content creation, and not everyone is able to contribute to learning at the organization, even if they are a subject matter expert. Not great.
